Metta (Loving-Kindness) Meditation
Metta bhavana, or loving-kindness meditation is a method of developing compassion. It comes from the Buddhist tradition, but it can be adapted and practiced by anyone, regardless of religious affiliation. Loving-kindness mediation is essentially about cultivating unconditional, inclusive love; a love with wisdom and not expectations. Unless we have a measure of this unconditional love and acceptance for ourselves, it is difficult to extend it to others. So we begin with loving ourselves, first. This practice softens the mind and heart; breaking down barriers that we feel inwardly towards ourselves. Loving-kindness is not a sentimental feeling of goodwill, not an obligation, but comes from a selfless place.
